Mission

The Ines Mandl Research Foundation Inc., is a charitable grant making and research foundation active in the field of connective tissue research. The Foundation’s late Founder and former President, Dr. Ines Mandl, who passed away August 5, 2016 at age 99 was the first woman to earn a PhD from then Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, in 1949.  Thereafter, she enjoyed an illustrious career and reputation as one of the world’s leading biochemists. She was unwavering in her belief that biochemistry is the scientific background that helps to produce all medicines. Throughout her life Dr. Mandl made annual grants in the fields of connective tissue to such preeminent educational institutions as the American Friends of the Hebrew University, Tandon School of Engineering (previously, NYU Polytechnic) and Columbia University.  It was her wish that the Foundation continue this tradition.

The Foundation is devoted exclusively to a program of support for charitable, scientific and educational activities within the meaning of section 501 (c)(3), with a focus on connective tissue research. Notably, the Foundation promotes and supports research in connective tissue diseases, including, but not limited to emphysema and genetic diseases, especially those related to elastin and elastase concentrating in the causes as opposed to the cure or treatment of the disease.  Research support may also include the fields of immunology and bio-chemistry.
